AN Accrington headteacher has criticised the Government over its suggestion that classroom assistants can easily 'baby-sit' pupils for teachers.
Katrina Ryan, of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic High School, spoke out during an awards evening speech last night at the Wordsworth Road school.
She said: "Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic Comprehensive with a hard-working, committed staff who have spent a minimum of four years training for the job they do.
They deserve better than the Government's suggestion that a teaching assistant can easily fill their place by baby-sitting a class for which the teacher has set work -- the young people in our care deserve better too.
"Please make no mistake I whole-heartedly applaud the use of teaching assistants in classrooms doing as their title suggests that is assisting and supporting the class teacher."
