THE Home Office is to investigate complaints about the time it takes to get through to the police on the phone.
Chorley MP Lindsay Hoyle said constituents had complained to him about delays. He has raised the matter with the Home Office which has promised to look into it.
Mr Hoyle has also met with the police who, he said, promised improvements. "If people have a crime to report or need to get in touch with the police urgently they should not have to wait on the end of a phone for minutes on end," said the Labour MP.
Callers to Chorley Police Station now have to go through a centralised telephone system in Hutton before being redirected to the local station.
"These problems did not exist when telephone calls went straight through to Chorley Police Station," said Mr Hoyle.
The Lancashire Constabulary which handles over 400,000 emergency calls each year, blamed the delay on the increasing number of calls from mobile phones.
