HERO OF THE DAY: A 15-year-old boy was praised by a Bury court for his bravery in chasing the attacker of a terrified girl. Warren McGarry of Hardmans Road, Whitefield ran to the girl's aid after hearing her screaming and pursued the knife-wielding thug who was eventually arrested by police.
SIX OF THE BEST: Bury romped through to the second round of the FA Cup with almost embarrassing ease when they knocked six past Workington. The Shakers were to face Shrewsbury Town or Doncaster Rovers in the next round.
CALLED TO THE BAR: Hawkshaw lass Rosemary Broadhurst became the first Derby School pupil to have been called to the Bar.
HOT MONEY: A kitchen and first floor were severely damaged when fire broke out at the National Westminster Bank in Bridge Street, Ramsbottom. The blaze was spotted by police when flames were seen roaring through a ground floor rear window.
TAILOR-MADE CRIME: Staff arrived at Burton's clothes shop in Bury to discover suede coats worth £1,057 had been stolen. It was the third time that year that raiders had dropped through a sky-light at The Rock store to steal suede clothing.
