HUNDREDS more asylum seekers could be coming to the borough in the next few years.
Bury Council has agreed to accommodate seekers in 104 of its properties over a five-year period, which started last year.
They will be housed in a range of one-bed, two-bed and three-bed homes.
Private landlords and housing associations are also preparing houses across the borough for an unknown number of asylum seekers.
Bury is part of a North West consortium which has signed a contract to provide a specific number of homes, into which the Home Office will send seekers.
There are 194 asylum seekers currently in the borough. They have come from countries including Somalia, Iran, Afghanistan, Poland, Romania, Zimbabwe, Turkey, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Albania, Iraq and Sri Lanka.
The Government is proposing radical changes in policy for next year, including setting up reception centres, which could mean fewer asylum seekers being dispersed across the country.
