BABY Elizabeth Trenell's recent christening followed a family tradition.
Her big day was conducted at Atherton Parish Church by her 86-years-old great grandfather -- Canon Fred Thorne.
Now wheelchair-bound following a stroke 18 months ago, the Canon was assisted by Atherton-based Rural Dean, the Rev Bill Baldwin.
And the service at St John the Baptist was the latest in a lengthy catalogue of services led by Canon Thorne as part of his family's celebrations.
Swindon-born Mr Thorne conducted the christening service for his daughter, Anne Royle, 58 years ago and her three children. He also christened his grandchildren, firstly, Janet Trenell -- baby Elizabeth's mother -- 30 years ago, Sarah Lloyd five years later and, 22 years ago, Kate Royle 22 years.
He also conducted Janet's and Sarah's wedding services at the Atherton church to where Janet took Elizabeth from their home in Carlisle for the great-grandfather's blessing.
Canon Thorne, who now lives with his wife Dorothy at the Woodlands in Atherton, spent all his life in the church. He was ordained in 1937 and was a curate in London.
He was an ARP warden during the war and in 1981 retired as Rector of St Mary's, South Reddish.
Daughter Anne moved to Atherton in 1971 when her husband, Raymond, set up an accountancy practice, Parsons and Royle, in the town.
She said: "Dad has in fact christened most of the family.
"He is a regular member of the congregation at Atherton Parish Church and when it was suggested he conducted Elizabeth's christening the Rev Baldwin was very kind and helped him take the service."
