AN appeal is being launched to trace the surviving friends and relatives of a Clitheroe soldier.
Bob Grundy, from Bury, is hoping to find anyone with memories of Edgar Coleman, who served in Belgium with the Second or Fifth Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers.
According to records, Edgar was wounded in 1917, in battle at Passchendale, and discharged on October 19, 1917. His service number was 9142. Edgar, who died in 1936, had a wife, Alice.
Bob was contacted by a company in Belgium, who are digging in the former battlefields of Flanders. They uncovered a First World War groundsheet, and personal belongings. After tracing the service number on the property, it was found that they belonged to Edgar, formerly of Fort Street in Clitheroe.
Bob said: "What probably happened was that they were in battle, and had to move quickly, and he left his things behind. Or maybe when he was wounded he was picked up, and he left his belongings behind."
Anybody who can help should call Bob on 0161 7647661.
