This week, with HAZEL HARDING, leader of Lancashire County Council
MEMORY: Playing in (very cold) water in a stone sink at our terraced house in
the West End of Morecambe. I was under school age when we moved to Lancaster
so I think I was probably three at this time. I remember my hands being blue but I always loved playing with toy boats.
HOLIDAY: We had a "Runabout" ticket on the railway which meant we could travel
all over the country during the week. I can't really recall where we went but can remember very clearly the cafe on Preston Station where they served lovely soup!
HOUSE: Our first house was bought when we married and was a terraced house in Spring Hill Road, Accrington. I recently attended an event at Rhyddings High School and received an aerial view of the school. There in the top corner is Spring Hill Road and you can just make out the house!
JOB: My first wage was as a lifesaver at the Open Air Pool at Morecambe during the summer holidays.
PET: A tabby cat called Patrick. My sister and I pulled the wishbone at Christmas. She wished for a dog and I for a cat. I won and the cat arrived on March 17 -- St Patrick's Day.
CAR: It was a Triumph Herald convertible.
AMBITION: To be a games teacher. It seemed like a good idea at the time but I changed my mind between the ages of 11 and 16 and ended up in journalism which was probably far more my sort of job.
RECORD: Cliff Richard's "Living Doll". I was 11 and did not have a record player, nor did anyone else in the family.
SCHOOLFRIEND: Susan Harris at primary school. We were separated at 11 by the 11 Plus -- something I have disliked ever since.
LOVE: Obviously Geoffrey, the little boy who used to play with toy boats in the sink with me. It must have been love that made me withstand the cold water. We lost touch after but the families didn't. Sadly, Geoff died very young.
ELECTION VICTORY: County council election, May 1985. I stood because we were campaigning for a youth and community centre in Crawshawbooth where I live. I thought I could do better if I made my points within the county and it worked.
