A 19-year-old youth has been cleared of unlawfully 'glassing' a man in pub toilets, after a trial at Burnley Crown Court.
Jay Woods, of Wellfield Road, Blackburn, was found not guilty of wounding after a two day trial. He was discharged from the dock.
The court had heard claims Mark Peacock, 20, was 'glassed,' for nothing after he and a friend followed a man into the toilets to ask him why he had been chatting up their mate's girlfriend.
Woods, who was a former classmate of the man, Christopher Willis and had been chatting to him, was said to have attacked Mr Peacock, who was left bleeding heavily and had to go to hospital.
Richard Bennett, defending, told the jury Mr Peacock and his friend had gone to 'duff up,' Mr Willis and Woods was subjected to an unprovoked assault after he intervened.
He told the jury Woods accepted he struck Mr Peacock on the head with a glass, but he had had no option because at the time Mr Peacock, his friend and possibly another man were kicking and punching him whilst he was on his knees in a cormer.
Mr Bennett said Woods had picked up the glass from the sink in order to defend himself and had got hold of the first thing that came to hand.
