THROAT infections and a last-minute cast change still didn't stop Rent storming into Blackpool Grand Theatre on Monday.
And if this is how it sounds when half the cast of the controversial rock musical have the November sniffles then audiences are in for a treat when the most versatile voices heard for some time are restored to full strength.
Former soap and pop star Adam Rickitt is struggling film maker Mark who narrates the tale of New York City life in the 80s when rents were spiralling and AIDS had begun to grip the nation. His flatmate Roger (normally the delicious Damien Flood and on Monday played by the very able Tom Kanavan) is an angry musician who is HIV positive and frightened to death of the life he has left.
Headline name Adam probably pulls in some of the crowds and he is impressive in a weightier role than he is normally associated with, despite his voice failing him slightly due to a severe battle against 'flu.
But it's the rich velvet tones of Mykal Rand as former roommate Tom Collins, sweet soul sounds from Wendy Mae Brown as lesbian lawyer Joanne, and the sheer power of Debbie Kurup's heroin addict Mimi that stay in the mind.
Relationships start and finish passionately, protests are powerfully staged, and love is seen as something for everyone and not just the white, straight and solvent in this stunning semi-autobiographical tale from Jonathan Larson.
Rent a sensational slice of real life at Blackpool Grand Theatre until Saturday.
