TWO Bury adventurers who followed in the footsteps of the Incas during a gruelling five-day trek in Peru are back home.

And thanks to their efforts, Mrs Eileen Taylor and her friend Mrs Gina Melling raised almost £6,000 for The Children's Hospitals Appeal.

The intrepid duo were among 50 trekkers from all over the North West who took part in the event.

"Months of hard work in raising sponsorship and physical training culminated in the walk over the Andes and up to an altitude of 4,200 metres," said Eileen.

The journey was even more of a feat for the 44-year-old of Thames Close, Bury.

Because of a back injury, she was forced to give up her job in the medical profession where she had worked as a registered nurse and midwife at local hospitals for 17 years.

She is now a specialist support assistant with the local education authority.

Commenting on the marathon trek, along with Mrs Melling of Rochdale Old Road, Bury, Eileen added: "Both of us believe that every ache and pain was a little price to pay to help the sick children of the North West.

"And we would like to encourage others to become involved with this charity."

She thanked family and friends and others who had sponsored the Peru trip.

It also seems that Gina and Eileen are both gluttons for punishment. Both intend to complete another trail next year, so would-be sponsors beware.
