A TEENAGER has been sentenced to 21 months youth custody for his part in the mid-summer disorder in Burnley.

Joseph Brogan, 19, had been committed to Preston Crown court for sentence after pleading guilty to violent disorder on June 24.

A number of other defendants are also due before the courts.

Passing sentence, Judge Stuart Baker told Brogan, of Swanage Road, he had seen a video of the incident which he described as a "ferocious onslaught on the police".

He said the disorder which took place was extremely serious involving the shocking use of violence, which generated widespread anxiety and concern.

He said there had been tension and a disturbance the night before and on June 24 there was the threat and the reality of further violence involving the white and Asian community. The police were discharging their duty to protect the public from violence.

Judge Baker said Brogan had been a customer in a pub when officers arrived and were confronted by a crowd throwing a large number of missiles and were goading the police into action lunging forward at them. In the region of 500 bottles were used as well as other items.

Ken Green, defending, said Brogan's involvement had been spontaneous rather than planned and he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Brogan did not have any hostility towards the police and had allowed himself to be carried away with the group.

He had brought shame and remorse on his family and his behaviour had been out of character, said Mr Green who added that Brogan had no previous convictions.
