CANDIDATES from Blackburn and Darwen are leading the way when it comes to the latest social care training.
A group of 28 foster carers and residential social workers have successfully completed their NVQ Level 3 in Caring for Children and Young People.
They spent 18 months working towards the nationally-recognised qualification. The course is run in partnership with Blackburn College and involves taught session and regular work place assessments.
The Government wants all unqualified residential social workers to have the NVQ by 2003. Blackburn with Darwen Council got started early in 1998 and is well ahead of many other authorities in the country.
Coun Sue Reid, Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council's Executive Member for Social Services, said: "The course is tough, especially on top of normal work and caring responsibilities. The award holders deserve praise for their efforts.
"Blackburn with Darwen Council has an excellent record for providing this training.
Well qualified and skilled foster carers and residential care staff , plus the Councils continuing investment in improving services, means that children and young people in Blackburn with Darwen will receive the high standards of care they expect and deserve."
A high profile award ceremony is planned for Friday, November 30 at Blackburn Town Hall. Coun Reid will be joined by special guests, including Social Services managers and representatives from Blackburn College, to celebrate the achievements of the award holders.
