A MEDIATION service for feuding neighbours in Preston has celebrated its fourth anniversary with an increase in helpers and a cash boost.

The Preston Area Neighbour Dispute Action group (PANDA) welcomed its latest recruits last week, six new mediators who bring the number of mediators to 34.

PANDA was set up in 1997 as a neutral arbitrator in disputes about anything from noise or car parking to boundary disputes.

Since then the organisation, based at Preston Town Hall, Birley Street, has dealt with more than 1,000 people.

Last year 229 cases were referred to PANDA by councils, housing associations, police and other organisations, with agreement reached in 73 cases, and only two cases showing no improvement.

And volunteers have another reason to celebrate after Preston Borough Council secured permanent funding for the group of £38,500 a year.

Len Crook, a PANDA volunteer, has resolved 100 dispute cases and was last week presented with a certificate from the town's Mayor, Councillor Alan Hackett, to mark his achievement. Mr Crook said: "It makes a great impact on you when you help neighbours to resolve their problems - the thrill is exceptional.

"Mediation has given me so much - its broadened my horizons, improved my skills and I've made great friends. What more can one ask?"

Coun Hackett praised the PANDA service adding: "We are very pleased to give our full support."

PANDA's co-ordinator Arlene Williams said: "Our service has grown over the last few years so it is important we can train more volunteers to help meet demand.

"I would like to pay tribute to all the volunteers who have helped to make PANDA such a well used and valuable service.

"I would also like to thank all our funding partners for their support."
