POLICE in Nelson have drafted in extra resources in a bid to crack down on local crime in the run up to Christmas -- including a mobile police station.
As part of the county-wide campaign Operation Reassure, they have borrowed a mobile police station from police headquarters, which will be parked on the Ringstone Crescent estate between December 3 and 7.
Inspector Paul Robinson, from Nelson Police Station, said: "It is no coincidence that the arrival of the mobile police station coincides with our crime crackdown in Lancashire
" We hope that the station will provide a reassuring police presence for local residents and act as a deterrent for offenders coming to the area to commit crime.
"The officers working in the station will be able to deal with all sorts of issues so we'll be able to help whether you want to report a crime, talk about a matter of concern or pick up a leaflet on crime prevention."
As well as using the mobile station, officers will also be visiting local homes with crime prevention literature giving advice on how to combat crime and in particular reduce the risk of being burgled.
They will also be actively targeting known criminals.
Mr Robinson said: "Pennine Division is totally committed to reducing offences and the fear of crime across the country.
"Hopefully having an additional police presence around and someone available to talk locally will go some way towards helping us achieve that."
