MORECAMBE'S MP Geraldine Smith was given a behind the scenes look at the new security arrangements during a visit to Heysham power stations last week.
The MP was taken on a two hour tour of Heysham 2 and saw at first hand many of the new arrangements which have been put in place since September 11.
She talked with station director John Calnan about security and the Government's energy review.
The review was set up by the Government to look at the country's on-going energy needs and how increasing demand can be met without creating environmental problems.
Although there are no immediate plans for new build at Heysham, the company is proposing, in its submission, to replace nuclear with nuclear at other sites around the country.
Ms Smith said: "I was very impressed with security arrangements in place at the power stations. The best security is that which is not made public and that can pose a problem for the station which cannot disclose its arrangements. But as an independent observer I can say that I am completely satisfied with the security arrangements I have seen. I can say that I felt a lot safer walking around Heysham 2 than I sometimes do around London."
