A MISSED penalty by Lennie Johnrose and a couple of mistakes by teenage keeper James Salisbury sent the Clarets reserves to their first defeat under manager Ronnie Jepson.

Goals late in each half ensured victory for the Millers who climbed above Burnley in the Avon Insurance Premier Division, albeit having played two games more.

To complete a frustrating night for the home side Greece Under-21 striker Dimitri Papadopoulos was controversially booked for diving despite appearing to be fouled not once but twice as he bore down on the Rotherham goal.

It was Papadopoulos who won the 17th minute penalty that should have given the Clarets the lead. Papadopoulos looked lively all night and he burst through the defence before being brought down by Guy Branston as he prepared to shoot from close range.

Johnrose has a scored a couple of times from the spot for the reserves this season but the skipper's shot was at a nice height for keeper Ian Gray as he dived to his right to push it away.

At the other end Salisbury had made a good early save to tip over Darren Garner's fierce shot and he then held a long range effort from Danny Hudson after Johnrose lost the ball in midfield.

But it was Salisbury's decision making that gifted the Millers an opener two minutes before the break. There seemed little danger as the ball was played forward towards Warne but the keeper rushed out, was beaten to the ball and the striker slid the ball home.

After the break the Clarets had a number of chances to level, Brad Maylett and Mark Rasmussen had weak shots saved and both Papadopoulos and substitute Matty O'Neill missed the target from close range when they should have done better.

It was in the 64th minute that Papadopoulos was shown the yellow card and when he went down in the box a couple of minutes later Rotherham players were demanding a second booking and dismissal.

Salisbury's mixed evening was encapsulated when a poor kick gifted the ball to Jose Miranda just outside the area only for the keeper to save bravely at his feet.

But he was at fault when beaten in stoppage time low to his left by Paul Warne.

It was only Burnley's second defeat of the season and their first at home. They will hope to bounce back when they travel to Wolves on Monday.
