A LOCAL councillor has called on the local authority to do more to ease traffic speeds and congestion in residential areas.
Cllr Ian Barker, who represents Bulk, says his ward is particularly hard hit by rat runs and dangerous crossings.
He said: "First, we need 20 mph zones in the four residential areas where we introduced traffic calming in the past - Freehold, Ridge, Newton and Alfred Street. Councils now have the freedom to introduce these zones without reference to the Government, we should be getting on with the job. Secondly, there is an urgent need to look at dangerous road junctions, particularly the crossroads on Quernmore Road/East Road where we need to reduce speeds and make priorities clearer."
He added: "Thirdly, we need to improve pedestrian safety on Bulk Road. A pedestrian crossing has been turned down in the past, but more and more traffic is using this rat run. It is absurd that there are lights to help pedestrians get half way across from the traffic island to the old bus garage, but no way of safely crossing to the island."
