DETAILS of the proposed multi-million pound redevelopment of Rawtenstall town centre, including new town hall, bus station and shops, have been revealed by the council.
Two companies, whose identities are being kept confidential, are working together to formalise plans for the redevelopment of the town centre and shopping area -- the Valley Centre.
The plan is for the town hall to be demolished and the site and adjacent car parks to be built on, with shops at ground floor level and a first-floor town hall which will also take over some of the Valley Centre. There will still be a reception at ground floor level fronting Bacup Road.
The bus station will be relocated to the opposite side of Bacup Road and the bus depot and station developed for retail use and car parking.
Rossendale Council leader Coun John Holt said: "This is an exciting time for Rawtenstall and the borough as a whole. "A number of firms both from within and out of the Valley are showing a real interest in Rossendale.
"It the scheme proceeds, coupled with the development on Lower Mill, the future will be a real bonus for Rossendale. It proves that the borough has potential and is attracting outside investment. The council is changing the way it operates to encourage inward investment and this is another indication of its success.
"Even if the scheme founders, the prospects still look good. The borough is attracting outside interest and investment.
"As soon as there are any further developments, full details will be given and the views of the public sought."
Coun Holt said there was still a great deal of work to be done, especially on the financial side. Any proposals would be subject to valuations, the costs of fitting out a new town hall premises and Lancashire County Council funding the new bus station.
It is also proposed that the Valley Centre be refurbished and enclosed when not open for business. The plans have been agreed in principle by the town centre sub-committee and at corporate policy committee.
No plans or drawings are being made public at this stage and Coun Holt said it was too early to give a timescale.
