MANY of Pendle's 350 asylum seekers were today expected to mark World Human Rights Day at a special event in Nelson, aimed at raising understanding about their plight and to recruit new volunteers.

Many at the event have fled persecution in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Cameroon and other countries to find safety in Britain.

Human Rights Day coincides with the international Festival of Lights and refugees will be lighting candles for loved ones at home whom they have not seen for many months or years.

New volunteers are desperately needed to offer support, including help with English written and conversational skills, organising cultural and social events and fundraising.

Anyone who can help should contact the Building Bridges office at19 Market Square, Nelson, on 01282 719303 or the Rev Sally Thomas on 01282 698048.

Asylum seekers and volunteers will also take part in the council's Caring Christmas Market on Saturday in Nelson town centre, between 10am and 3pm, where they will have a stall with competitions, Christmas gifts and special Kurdish soup.

Donations can be made at the Caring Christmas event or the Building Bridges office. Cheques should be made payable to the Refugees' and Asylum Seekers' Support Group (Pendle).

The Support Group is part of the Building Bridges organisation which strives to promote harmony and understanding among people of all faiths and cultural diversity.
