A WARTIME association which came to an end earlier this year has pledged more than £1,000 to local charities.
The Last Post signalled the end of an era when the Normandy Landing Association for Blackburn District officially came to an end in September when its flag was hung up at Fulwood Barracks.
In June the group held its last church service to remember the D-Day Landings on Normandy beaches in 1944.
After 27 years the group disbanded. Membership had dwindled from 70 to less than 20, with the remaining all in their 70s.
After all monies were accounted for there was £1,100 left over, which has been divided between East Lancashire Hospice and Macmillan cancer relief nurses.
Welfare officer Joyce Croft said: "We wanted to keep the money local. Unfortunately a lot of our members have used either the hospice or Macmillan nurses. We gave them £550 each."
