BLACKBURN with Darwen LEA is to take part in a two-year pilot scheme, aimed at providing advice and support to schools which are buying information and communications technology (ICT) equipment and services.
The Independent Procurement Advisory Service (IPAS) will work with the LEA to provide schools with impartial and up-to-date advice about how to develop their own ICT procurement process using best practice and ensuring best value for money. Four other LEAs in the country are also taking part in the scheme.
The service will give guidance and raise awareness of ICT procurement issues through its website http://ipas.ngfl.gov.uk which will include information sheets and an interactive on-line training programme.
IPAS will also work with schools and LEAs to provide seminars and workshops, consultancy services and call centre support.
The IPAS team is made up of a range of professionals with a broad experience- including ICT curriculum issues, all phases of education, teacher education and technical and project management.
IPAS manager Ann Charleton said: "The rapid increase in the use of ICT in the delivery and management of education means that schools have to make informed decisions about how to buy and use ICT resources. "Because they have received sound, practical advice, schools will be better able to weigh up alternative procurement options.
"We envisage that the development of the pilot may be different in each area and that information gained and processes developed will inform a possible national roll-out of the service."
