DAVID Moyes today began the task of picking up his players following
yesterday's beefed-up Lancashire hot pot derby clash with the message: "We
can win next weekend."
PNE's defence made like statues for the first goal, which Arthur Gnohere
poked home from a Lee Briscoe free kick on 17 minutes.
Lee Cartwright then carelessly gave the ball away to Glen Little who
pounced on the error to score a beauty with his left foot.
Preston hit back, first with a 20-yard screamer from Paul McKenna and then
Graham Alexander scored from the penalty spot after Graham Branch was ruled to have fouled David Healy inside the box.
But in the second half, Gnohere hit his second goal of the game to complete
the victory for Burnley - and it would have been four had Gareth Taylor's
lob not been ruled out after the linesman claimed the Claret sub had fouled
Chris Lucketti on the way to the goal.
For their part, Jon Macken, David Healy and Steve Basham all had good
chances but just couldn't finish the job off.
Moyes said: "We were the better team on the day and I thought the lads did
very well to come back from two down.
"But if you give away three goals at home, you cannot expect to win.
"I think we were in the ascendancy for most of the game.
"They did have the best chance of the game, however, but David Lucas
pulled off two fine saves.
"It doesn't feel great to end an unbeaten run but it is important that we
now try and start another one.
"We have been getting a lot of draws of late but a win next weekend would
be better than two draws."
