A MAN arrested after a 13-year-old boy was killed in a hit-and-run incident in Burnley at the weekend will appear before Burnley magistrates on Thursday.

Nigel Patrick Canning, 32, of Manchester Road, Burnley, was last night charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident and report it. He was also charged with a number of other motoring offences, a police spokesman said.

Anthony Tattersall died on Sunday, a day after the accident in Centenary Way, Burnley. His school said today they may erect a memorial garden in his honour.

Iain Hulland, headteacher at Alder Grange High School, where Anthony, of Wiswell Drive, Rawtenstall, was a pupil, said the mood at the Rawtenstall school was "very sombre."

Mr Hulland said: "We didn't hold a full assembly yesterday because it would have been too upsetting but I have spoken to all the youngsters. They want to write down their memories of Anthony, put them all together and hand them to his parents.

"A lot of them want his life to be celebrated and we are looking at perhaps naming a prize after him at the annual presentation evening or having a memorial garden.

"Anthony was a very cheerful, outgoing boy. There is a deep sense of loss which is difficult to put into words."

Anthony was crossing the road with a group of friends after visiting a bowling alley when he was struck by a car close to the slip road with Finsley Gate. Police said the driver did not stop. After a search on Saturday night, a vehicle was recovered following a call from a member of the public.

His parents are said to be too distraught to talk about the accident.

Father David Lupton, of the St James the Less RC Church, in Rawtenstall, where Anthony attended, said prayers were held for the youngster and his family on Sunday.
