PENDLESIDE Hospice was lit up as 2,200 bulbs were switched on for their annual Light up a Life Campaign.

The campaign allows people who have lost a loved one to sponsor a bulb to raise money for the Colne Road hospice. Everyone who sponsors a bulb is also entered in a leather-bound book of remembrance that is kept on display at the hospice throughout the year.

According to organisers, Light up A Life allows people to celebrate the life of a love one in a positive and symbolic way." As well as an opportunity to remember loved ones, the campaign is a major fundraiser for the hospice and £25,000 has already been received.

The lights were switched on by the Mayor of Burnley, Coun Jack Alston, with music was provided by the Salvation Army band .

Kay Bartle, fundraising manager for the hospice, said: "This is a wonderful event. The switch on is very often filled with emotion as the lights are switched on, giving people a poignant and positive way to remember their loved ones at this special time of year.

"Every year the costs of running the hospice increase and when we look at the huge fund-raising mountain we have to climb it can sometimes seem an impossible task.

"However, the generosity of the people of Burnley and Pendle never ceases to amaze me in making sure that the people's Hospice continues to provide desperately needed care to the local community."
