AMBULANCE worker John Ward will be hoping he will not have to call on his colleagues when he takes part in his first marathon next year.

The 49-year-old, who works on patient transport service, at the Accrington station, has never done a marathon before and is currently in training, confident he will complete the gruelling trek in one piece.

John, of Kingsley Close, Church, is taking part in next April's London Marathon to raise money for Children with Leukaemia.

He said: "As well as being a personal challenge and an opportunity to be part of a great event, it also allows me to help a very worthy cause.

"I work in the NHS and I see the effects of illness every day and also the tremendous work that the NHS staff in all departments do. If I can give some support to that work by doing this marathon then it will make it all the more rewarding."

If anyone wants to sponsor him they can contact him c/o Accrington Ambulance Station, Broad Oak Road, Accrington.
