GROT Spots in Springhill, Accrington could be a thing of the past, thanks to a group of motivated youngsters who took matters into their own hands.

The group of 15 were inspired by a recent environmental study funded by Lancashire County Council and took to the streets themselves to photograph the worst areas.

Their venture was assisted by the Accrington Church and Great Harwood Partnership, who viewed the evidence they had collected along with the newly-formed Springhill Community Forum at their joint Christmas celebration.

Images included derelict houses, excessive vandalism and vast amounts of rubbish outside properties, especially in the Lonsdale Street area.

Photographs of the area's more attractive points were also included in the display, to show how the ward might look if appropriate funding is found to carry out the work.

Council officers, at the meeting to look at the collection, agreed an environmental action plan should be put together and put into action in the New Year.

County Councillor Jean Battle, said: "I am impressed that young people have taken time during school holidays to identify what needs to be done to improve the area where they live.

"So often, youngsters are thought of in a negative light, but this initiative has proved that given support and resources youngsters can use their leisure time positively for the good of the community.

"The Accrington Church and Great Harwood Partnership will support them to make Springhill environmentally more friendly for residents."
