SIR,
HOW good to see the people of Leigh have come to realise the need for public toilets in town.
Experience gleaned from over 20 years of campaigning suggested nobody wanted to know. Councillors would make excuses that it it cost too much to keep the toilets in repair and there was no money to pay for an attendant.
Toilets are a health hazard and need constant cleaning. This care can only be done if there is an attendant. A forward-looking council would have seen the need for toilets in the town and given it priority when the new market hall was built.
A toilet I saw on the Isle of White was all steel walls, steel bowls, steel wash basins and driers, all push button. Modern times need modern facilities. Those are 95 per cent vandal proof.
The old brick thunder boxes are out of date and a haven for drug users and vandals, so get with it Councillors and planning and give thought for the old and those with bladder problems. For such people toilets are a necessity not a luxury.
If you are short of money then show some public spirit and give up the pay rise you have given your selves.
Relieved,
Leigh.
