Clarets chairman Barry Kilby has vowed to back Stan Ternent in the transfer market as the club's push for the Premiership gathers pace.
"Some money is available for transfer fees but it has to be up to a certain amount," he said.
"The important thing is that the manager knows the situation and he knows he can come to the board when he has identified a target."
And while rival clubs have been splashing big money on signings this season he points out what Ternent has achieved for very little outlay.
"We have added Arthur Gnohere and Alan Moore to the squad without them costing any fee at all," he said. "Also we supported the manager when he wanted to buy Tony Grant from Manchester City but he did not break the bank.
"Paul Cook and Andy Payton have moved out for now but that was not to make room for other players, it was just the right thing to do at the time."
After recording losses of around £5million in the past three years the Clarets board had ben looking at balancing the books this season.
Kilby acknowledged that the prospect of reaching the cash cow that is the Premier League might loosen the purse strings but he has absolutely no intention of jeopardising the club's long term future.
"We are building the club and we showed that last week by making sure we had Arthur and Glen Little on longer contracts," he said.
"We do not have to sell players, we want to build up the team.
"But we do not want to be having to spend a lot of money on someone as a last throw of the dice to try and get up.
"You need to have the money to be able to spend it and we know how much we have got. We will not be going out and spending £5million on a player and we can't go and get someone like David Ginola."
The French winger is just one name that has been linked with a move to Turf Moor in the past few days.
Bradford City are reported to be holding out for a fee in excess of £1million before they part with striker Robbie Blake and Ternent has suggested that having had a bid turned down the interest has died. Tranmere Rovers midfielder Jason Koumas, who scored a hat-trick at the weekend, is another but Ternent is keeping his cards as close to his chest as ever.
Tonight Clarets reserves are in action against Wolverhampton Wanderers in a match that will be played at RAF Cosford.
Last week Ronnie Jepson saw his side lose for the first time since he took over as reserve team manager, a 2-0 reverse against Rotherham at Turf Moor, and he is hoping for an improved performance.
Injured players Mitchell Thomas and Steve Davis are still not fit for action so they will not be involved, suggesting they are still a couple of games away from pushing for a place in the first team.
Dimitri Papadopoulos is likely to be played up front alongside Tony Ellis and Luigi Cennamo will return in goal after serving a one match suspension last week.
"I am looking for a better display because we did not do well last week," said Jepson.
