ENGLAND were finally dismissed for 407 in the second Test at Motera as Craig White's maiden Test hundred helped frustrate India.
White was last man out for 121, bowled by Harbhajan Singh attempting to repeat his shot of two balls earlier when he hoisted the spinner for six over midwicket.
His innings spanned more than six hours, from 265 deliveries and included 12 fours and two sixes.
The Yorkshire all-rounder, who had reached his half-century with a towering six over long-on off Harbhajan, clenched his fist as he tickled Anil Kumble around the corner for his century.
England vice-captain Marcus Trescothick suggested before the start today that England could better 400, despite the capitulation of the tail in both innings of the series opener.
White's ton duly hauled the score to beyond that mark from the overnight 277 for six.
That he managed to reach the landmark was down to a combination of adventure and fortune.
He took advantage of four escapes to share in England's best-ever seventh-wicket stand against India in India - 105 with young wicketkeeper James Foster.
Essex's Foster, in only his second Test, finally fell for 40 to a marvellous catch by Sachin Tendulkar - diving full length to his left at midwicket off the bowling of Kumble who finished with seven wickets.
White and Foster's positive approach nurtured some luck along the way in a direct contrast to yesterday when some poor umpiring from Zimbabwean Ian Robinson pre-empted a five-wicket folding.
With hopes of a challenging first-innings total resting heavily on their partnership - Foster began today on 15 not out - the duo played some exquisite strokes.
But White was provided with an initial let-off on 44 when Deep Dasgupta fumbled a stumping opportunity off Harbhajan.
