IREAD with dismay the comments of the president of the Blackburn Chamber of Trade, Mr Ron O'Keeffe, that for the younger people Christmas is a time to "go out and get drunk" (LET, December 7).
Does Mr O'Keeffe really believe that all young people have to drink themselves into a stupor in order to celebrate the birth of our Saviour?
Young people, Mr O'Keeffe, do have other values and priorities other than boozing.
Many, for instance, will be involved with helping out in soup kitchens and on the streets, giving food and hot drinks to the genuine homeless in our community. Others will give up their Christmas to visit the elderly, sick and lonely.
This will be the only 'buzz' that all young volunteers will need, together with a smile from their grateful recipients -- a look of joy that will not be found at the bottom of any glass or bottle.
