AN ANXIOUS mum is demanding urgent action after vehicles were wrecked outside her farmhouse door.
Elena Hampson had just returned to the family home in Sandy Lane, Lowton at 9pm on Friday when she and her partner, who have a total of seven children, heard a crash.
They dashed out to discover a car had smashed into the back of their Izuzu Jeep, shunting it into the family's Escort Cabriolet and writing-off both their vehicles.
Damage totalling £12,500, was caused in the smash involving a Vauxhall Cavalier in which two local youths were travelling.
The 16 year-old driver has been charged with driving while under the influence of drink and a number of other motoring offences. Both he and his 15 year-old passenger have been charged with aggravated vehicle taking. They are due to appear in court on January 3.
According to Elena this isn't the first such incident, she explained: "Seven months ago I witnessed a drink-driver just miss my vehicle and hit next door's. I took his registration and Police were able to track him down. He was later convicted of drink-driving. Then, two months later a girl drove into my Jeep causing £5,500 worth damage. The car she was driving wasn't hers and she wasn't insured, so the liability fell on my insurance."
Elena has lived at New Barn Farm for 10 years and has been campaigning for the council to improve road safety with a pavement, street lights, more road-signs and traffic calming for the last five years.
She said: "Sandy Lane is a country lane, but is used as a short cut by people travelling to Leigh and a rat run for drink-drivers. The traffic has increased tenfold over the last two or three years and it's become dangerous to even get into our car. There are no pavements for the children to stand on and there are no street lights for drivers to see us. It isn't safe."
Elena plans to continue campaigning to make the road safer for herself, her vehicles and her children and says she is prepared to take action if nothing is done.
She said: "The council promised after the first accident, in February, that they would make further investigations into the situation, but nothing has changed. I have six children at home, five of which are under 10, and I don't want to lose any of them as another road accident statistic. I'm prepared to block the road if I have to."
Hope Carr councillor Lynne Liptrot said: "Myself and my colleagues will be meeting with Mrs Hampson to discuss the situation and see what action can be taken."
