A BANNED motorist from Oswaldtwistle, who had more than twice the legal amount of alcohol in his system when he crashed his car, will be spending Christmas behind bars.

Skegness magistrates sent David Morris, of Birch Crescent, Oswaldtwistle, to a young offenders' institution for two months after they were told how his car finished upside down in a field off the A52 at Wainfleet, Lincs.

Morris, 20, had previously admitted driving while banned, driving with excess alcohol in his breath and driving without insurance. After reading reports, the bench at Skegness sentenced him to two months in a young offenders' institution and banned him from driving for two years.

He was offered the chance to reduce the ban by six months by attending a drink driver rehabilitation course.

Prosecuting, Mr Nicholas Alderson said that shortly after 11.30pm on November 18 this year police attended the scene of an accident on the A52 at Wainfleet.

They found Morris's car upside down in a field but there were no occupants.

Just after midnight police saw Morris and another male.

Morris had suffered cuts and there was blood on his clothing.

Police noticed a strong smell of alcohol, but both men denied any involvement in the car crash. They both provided a positive breath test and were taken to the police station.

A subsequent test by Morris on the intoxilyser machine showed a reading of 72 micrograms, just over double the legal limit of 35mgs, said Mr Alderson.

During the course of a police interview Morris admitted that not only was he the driver, but that he was also disqualified.
