IT GAVE me great satisfaction to read Mr M Baron's letter about the road and I agree entirely -- an early solution would be to get rid of the five sets of traffic lights and the 'no-go' hatched areas, as there is plenty of room to make the road a dual carriageway with a little amount of civil roadwork -- minimal cost and a couple of pedestrian bridges would suffice, especially seeing what was paid out for the pedestrian 'bridge too dear' across the Lune.

Why do people cater for pedestrians so much when practically everyone never walks anywhere these days!

And I've yet to see a bus in the bus lane, is there no-one with any practical vision on the council?

Similarly I applaud Mr Bauckham's letter regarding our sacrifices in the last war.

My mother lost three cousins, all brothers, to win the bridge at Arnhem, all on the same day.

Was their ultimate sacrifice made to what we have now?

The way we are now, we should drop the 'great' out of Great Britain with what has developed over the past 30 years. Not enough discipline by parents on their children and tying the hands of schoolteachers to do their job.

The whole of the 'do-gooders' criticising what we do, but not giving one positive solution or sensible alternative. Companies ripping the public off for as much as they can so they beat the previous year's profit level and us Brits sending money to America for the Twin Towers incident -- did they send us money when the IRA have killed people here? -- No.

I really despair as to how this country has 'progressed' since the 1950s/1960s -- there was a musical in the 60s that was called 'Stop the World -- I want to get off' -- that is a reality now for me..
