GREEK striker Dimitri Papadopoulos fired a hat-trick against Wolves last night to help the Clarets reserves to an impressive 5-2 victory.

And his fellow countryman Giorgios Alexopoulos had an impressive game in defence as he looked to impress in his first match on trial at the club.

Goals from Brad Maylett and Andrew Waine helped Ronnie Jepson's team put last week's disappointing display against Rotherham behind them.

Papadopoulos opened the scoring in the sixth minute after picking the ball up in the area, riding a tackle and firing home.

Wolves had a strong strike partnership in Cedric Roussel and Adam Proudlock and Luigi Cennamo was forced to make a couple of sharp saves.

But after 23 minutes he was caught in no-man's-land, allowing Proudlock to square the ball to Roussel, who tapped the ball home.

Eight minutes before the break Burnley were back in front. A free-kick just inside the Wolves half was launched into the box by Mark McGregor and Papadopoulos's flying header sent the ball into the roof of the net.

Cennamo was forced into a good save to deny Roussel a second, coming quickly off his line to clear the danger.

Six minutes into the second half Papadopoulos turned provider, breaking into the box, beating two defenders and squaring to Brad Maylett who swept the ball home.

Wolves' £1 million striker George Ndah was then dismissed after clashing with Alexopoulos, who was booked in the incident.

Papadopoulos then had two chances to get his hat-trick. First he struck a powerful shot towards goal that dipped just over the bar and then he was inches from connecting again, this time from a cross by Shandran who had a good game down the right.

After 68 minutes, the game was sealed when Waine ended a good spell of pressure with a low drive from the edge of the area that found the corner.

Proudlock netted a consolation 15 minutes from time, Proudlock scoring at the second attempt and seconds later Cennamo made another important save to deny Roussel.

Papadopoulos finally got his hat-trick after 78 minutes, when he was felled by Anderson after being put clean through from a slick Maylett pass.

The Clarets had missed a penalty against Rotherham last week but the Greek under 21 international made no mistake as he slotted away the spot kick, before being immediately substituted with the game won.

It was a good night's work and could ensure that he keeps the place on the bench he had at Deepdale on Sunday.
