LANCASTER City's goalden boy Andy Whittaker got back on the goal trail with a brace as City completed a league double over Worksop on Saturday.

The former Bamber Bridge striker struck twice to give the Dolly Blues a big boost in their bid to catch Burton Albion at the top of the table.

City are now once again in a position where they can overhaul Nigel Clough's Brewers if they win their four games in hand after the Derbyshire side followed City's example and lost their game at Emley.

Colin Potts, who was later to limp off injured, latched on to another precise ball by Andy Lyons and looked certain to score himself until keeper Jamie Holmshaw cynically brought him down.

Whittaker despatched the penalty, but the referee decided Holmshaw's cynicism didn't deserve to earn him a red card and allowed the keeper to stay on the field.

The equaliser came on 37 minutes when a cross from Andy Gray bounced of the unfortunate city keeper Mark Thornley and into the path of Carl Smith, who didn't have much to do to score.

Once again City were forced to dig in and show the spirit which has helped them through this season.

Again, Andy Lyons was the creative force behind the goal and, on this occasion, Whittaker took advantage of an error from defender Martin Diggle to put the Blues back in front.
