A ROAD safety campaigner is fighting for better crossing facilities on a busy Leigh street.
Andrew Booth of Gorse Walk, Leigh, says two pedestrian crossings on Firs Lane are urgently needed.
He says the crossing patrols that currently operate on the road at school start and finish times are not adequate.
Mr Booth said: "What about when the crossing patrols are not there? What about the pensioners who put their lives at risk trying to cross Firs Lane for their pension? What about school holidays, especially summer when there are no crossing patrols and the parks are far busier?
"We need two pedestrian crossings on Firs Lane as well as better crossing facilities in a number of other areas in Leigh."
Mr Booth is so concerned about the state of the roads near Leigh schools that he is considering having bumper stickers printed with slogans such as "tailgating kills" and "kill your speed" to raise awareness.
He has also written to Wigan Council requesting better crossing facilities for Firs Lane and to Leigh MP Andy Burnham.
Mr Booth said: "I had a letter last week from the House of Commons, namely from Andy Burnham who has thrown his full weight behind my campaign."
