THE Rivington Pike Fell Race may be the country's oldest fell race.

Now nearly 120 years old, only the Hallamshire Chase in Sheffield is thought to be older - and that is no longer in the FRA calendar.

The first race was in 1882 and it became an official event in the 1920's when Bolton United Harriers were the organisers.

Horwich RMI Harriers took the race over after the Second World War, and now to mark its history, Peter Watson from the club has written a 200 page book with over 140 illustrations.

A grant of £2370 from Bolton Council plus support from Walsh Sports has enabled the project to go ahead and it was completed in time to be launched at this year's race at Easter.

Ironically, the race never took place because of foot and mouth disease but the book is available by contacting Peter on 01257-481264.

With the money raised going to the Horwich club, it would make an ideal Christmas present for the fell enthusiast.
