A HIT-AND- RUN driver left a mother of five injured on the street after a car somersaulted in the air and collided with her.

Marathon runner Margaret Trundle suffered leg injuries in the bizarre accident.

The driver climbed out the wreckage of the car and made off leaving her in agony on the pavement.

Mrs Trundle, 40, was walking along the pavement in Yorkshire Street, Burnley, when she was hit.

She suffered a broken toe and other leg injuries as the car landed on its roof right next to her.

She is now recovering at home in Rosehill Road, Burnley, after receiving treatment at Burnley General Hospital.

Police have appealed for the driver of the silver F-registered Ford Sierra to come forward.

Mrs Trundle said: "I was just on an evening out with two friends. We had been for a drink and were just going into the taxi office when it happened.

"I was still on the pavement with my friends in front of me. I didn't see anything, I just heard a thud and the next thing I knew I was on the floor.

"I looked to my right and there was a car on its roof right next to me."

"I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. But I think I am lucky not to have suffered more serious injuries."

Mrs Trundle attends Burnley College where she studies sports injuries.

She took up long distance running a few years ago and has competed in the London Marathon, in a time of three hours 45 minutes, and the Great North Run.

She added: "I just started training again recently but now I wont be doing any running for some time. As well as the broken toe there is an injury to my left knee which is badly bruised and swollen."

Traffic Sgt Russ Gregory said: "It would be better for the driver to come to forward before we go knocking on the door."

Sgt Gregory said the accident happened at 9pm yesterday in Yorkshire Street near to the junction with Turf Street.

The Sierra which was travelling towards the football club somesaulted through the air colliding with three bollards before hitting the pedestrian. It is not known if the driver was hurt.

The driver or any witnesses are asked to contact PC 1655 Phil Pilkington on 01282 472542.
