YOUNGSTERS can play away in Unsworth at the borough's latest refurbished play area.
The new Sunnybank site, at Hathaway Road, has been officially opened and has new equipment in a safer location.
it is part of a ten-year programme to refurbish 55 play areas in the borough, funded by £500,000 of share dividends from Manchester Airport. The aim is to have one play area for every 500 children.
After consultation, the council decided to move the old play area which was in a remote position in a nearby wooded area.
It has two sets of swings, a roundabout, two springy animals, a slide and a see-saw. The play area boasts full disabled access, safety surfacing and dog-proof fencing.
Councillor Alan Matthews, chairman of Whitefield and Unsworth area board, said: "Now there are plans to establish an all-weather ball zone on the Hathaway Road playing fields."
This year's programme of play area improvements includes Town's Meadow, Tottington; St Mary's Park, Prestwich; Simister Green, Simister; Openshaw Park, Bury; Park Lane, Whitefield; Kershaw Avenue, Prestwich; Phase 2 of the Brandlesholme play area, Bury; a new play area on the Hillock estate, Whitefield; and refurbishment works at Thatch Leach Lane and Besses in Whitefield.
