A YOUNG woman suffered a broken neck in an horrific road accident.
Claire Louise Clark, 21, of Pinfold Place, Nelson, suffered a broken neck and head injuries in the incident in the early hours of Saturday in Nelson.
Claire was crossing the A56 Leeds Road near the junction of Seldon Street at around 12.45am when she collided with a Volvo driven along the main road by David Malcolm Woodhead, 54, of Lee Road, Nelson.
Claire was taken to Burnley General Hospital where she remained unconscious on the high dependency unit before being transferred to Preston last night.
Sergeant Russell Gregory, of Colne Traffic Police, said: "They had always intended to transfer her to Preston but were making sure she was stable enough to be moved. She was a little better but is still very poorly."
Claire's parents and brother have been at her bedside since the accident and were too upset to speak about what happened.
Staff at Burnley General Hospital spent Sunday liaising with specialists from the Royal Preston Hospital on how best to treat Claire and her condition was being reviewed by consultants.
The busy main road was closed for three hours while police accident investigators examined the scene
Police have appealed for any witnesses to the accident to contact PC Chris Edwards at the road traffic unit at Colne on 01282 472431.
