The Clarets and Blues get lucky over Stockport County, Stan is a relieved man.

Carlton Palmer: "I said before the end of December and the start of January I should have identified some good fitness levels and whether it is still possible to stay up.

"But I have started making contingency plans and if we do go down I want to have the right squad to get promoted straight away.

"The chairman is backing me 110 per cent but it may well be the case that we are relegated.

"It has been run as a third division club in a first division shell.

"But I will not give up the ghost, I will keep working. Any player I see who chucks it in will be out."

Stan Ternent: "It is not normal for me to speak about the opposition but I thought that Stockport were excellent today, their commitment, skill and work ethic.

"Everything about them was top drawer. There is no doubt that if they keep performing like that they will take points off teams.

"But today was a different sort of match, an ugly sort of game and I thought the ball was screaming for mercy at times.

"We have to be competitive because there was no quarter asked and no quarter given.

"But I always think we are capable of winning games because we have got good players who are capable of turning a match."
