BURY hero George Clegg was looking forward to celebrating victory in style - by spending the rest of the weekend tucked up in bed.

The former Manchester United striker has been ill all week with gastric flu. He should not have been ready to play on Saturday but was so desperate for a game that he passed himself fit and begged the manager Andy Preece to pick him.

He did not let anyone down, running his heart out for 70 minutes and has done his chances of earning a permanent contract at Gigg Lane no harm at all.

"Cleggy, especially, was fantastic for us today," Preece said. "He is on a month to month contract and he lost eleven pounds on Tuesday and Wednesday because of his illness.

"He couldn't eat and had a stomach bug, but he is desperate to play and he did very well to get through seventy minutes. He was as much a danger as Newby and Seddon."

Preece added: "Just look at the players we have got in the team at this minute compared with the team we started the season with.

"There are probably just three of four players who are still in the team.

"When you have so many important and experienced senior players, who have not been involved, it's a credit to the likes of Dave Borley and (Jason) Jarrett and Cleggy."

Next match for Bury is at Gigg on Saturday December 22 when Blackpool are the visitors, kick off 3pm.
