A FREE bus service could prove the ideal Christmas gift for families isolated from their hospitalised loved ones over the festive holiday.
Buses are being provided for visitors to hospitals or hospices who have no other means of transport on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.
The scheme is being funded by Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority and run by the Community Minibus Agency.
Councillor Winston Ramsey, who represents the borough on the authority, said: "Christmas is a magical time of year for most people but we must not forget there are many people who find it to be a time of increased loneliness and isolation.
"The hospital service is a very important part of the authority's Christmas timetables and I am delighted that we are able to provide it again for the eighth year." Mr Brian Shawdale, director of the Community Minibus Agency, said: "We specialise in running affordable, accessible and appropriate passenger transport when traditional commercial bus services cannot meet people's needs."
The service can be booked through staff at hospitals and hospices.
Public transport arrangements in Bury over the festive holidays are contained in leaflets available at local Travelshop branches.
Greater Manchester's public transport information line can also be contacted daily between 8am and 8pm on 228-7811.
