A CAMPAIGN to secure compensation for former miners who have contracted serious illnesses through their work will be stepped up in the New Year.
Lancashire's branch of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) say former coal face workers are dying before receiving the compensation they deserve. Miners' leaders claim the government is failing to prioritise cases.
But families are urged to remain patient. The NUM say union solicitors will continue to fight to secure compensation payments from the Department of Trade and Industry. Families can still lodge claims.
Leigh-based Lancashire Miners leader Mr Billy Kelly called on MPs with mining family constituents to join the campaign. He urged them to demand in Parliament that settlements were made with speed and efficiency.
Calling the situation a scandal, Mr Kelly said: "The campaign for justice for disabled mineworkers will be stepped up in the New Year."
The Government agreed to pay out cash to former miners suffering from respiratory disease after a ruling three years ago. There are currently 167,000 claimants around the country - including dozens from Bolton. Illnesses include chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
