TWO voluntary workers have been awarded Hyndburn's new title of Honorary Freeman.
Dorothy Ann McGregor, of St Leger Court, Accrington, and Eunice Whittaker, of Fernlea Drive, Clayton-le-Moors, received their awards at the civic carol service at St James Church, Accrington.
Miss Whittaker has been a voluntary worker for more than 20 years including being secretary of the Save Accrington Victoria Hospital Campaign from 1979 until 1982, trustee of Hyndburn Christian Stable and has worked with the Citizens Advice Bureau for more than 15 years.
Her career has revolved around education at primary and secondary level. Miss McGregor has been a voluntary worker for more than 35 years and set up Maundy Relief which responds to community needs.
She has also been involved with Homeless in Hyndburn, the Information Shop for Young People, Age Concern's Caring Neighbourhood Scheme and Hyndburn Sick Poor Fund. She has worked as a nurse, psychiatric nurse, midwife, health visitor, medical social worker, and probation officer.
Hyndburn Council has nominated freeman sporadically over the years but now hopes to make this an annual event. The honour allows the recipients to be present at civic events, including the annual parade and to fish in the River Hyndburn without a licence.
