THE Post Office (Consignia) has hatched a plan to scrap door-to-door deliveries. The service is apparently losing £1.5 million a day.

A task force, branded Operation Armageddon, has been set up to find cheaper ways of delivering our mail.

Bosses want to contract the post out to private firms who will only deliver to homes if residents pay them.

Customers who couldn't or wouldn't pay a monthly fee would have to collect letters from a local post office or designated collection point.

Well that'll be a big success!

They have another thing coming if they believe I'm going to collect my own post or pay to have it delivered. All I receive is bills and rubbish and I don't particularly desire either. The utilities will have to dig into Sid's pocket to pay for delivery.

Last week Consignia announced that 30,000 jobs would be axed, but I know local postmen won't be surprised.

One told me months ago that if it wasn't for junk mail they'd be out of work.

Sounds like "The Last Post" for another accepted and long established way of life is on the cards.
