CHARLTON keeper Dean Kiely plans to intensify Graeme Souness's search for a striker by shutting out Rovers with another clean sheet in the capital tomorrow.

The Republic of Ireland international has become something of a cult hero at the Valley since his £1 million move from Bury in May 1999.

In his first season with Athletic, the 31-year-old equalled the club record for clean sheets with 19 as Alan Curbishley's men roared to promotion.

A groin injury then kept him out for much of last season but he's bounced back brilliantly this term, chalking up another five clean sheets as the Addicks continue to defy the bookies.

Yet despite his impressive form in the Premiership, he continues to play second fiddle to Shay Given at international level.

Republic boss Mick McCarthy tends to rotate Kiely and Rovers keeper Alan Kelly on the bench.

But, with the World Cup finals fast approaching, the Salford-born stopper is determined to establish himself as number one.

One man who seems certain of a place in Japan and South Korea, however, is Rovers keeper Brad Friedel.

The Big American has been inspired all season and Souness rates him among the top three in the Premiership.

He may well have to live up to that reputation tomorrow if Rovers intend to return home with an early Christmas present.
