WANTED! The views of the public on their top crime-fighting priorities.

A crime and disorder strategy is being drawn up to pinpoint areas of most concern to residents in the borough.

Bury Community Safety Partnership has identified seven priorities, and is now putting them out for public consultation and inviting comments and other suggestions.

Derek Burke, police community consultative worker for Bury, gave an explanation of the crime and disorder audit to a meeting of the Whitefield and Unsworth Area Board on Monday (Dec 17).

Councillor Sylvia Mason said she was particularly concerned at the number of post office robberies in the borough, which have terrorised staff and customers. Inspector David Jones, head of Prestwich and Whitefield Township, said the force was looking at ways of combating robbery as a whole, and already works very closely with large stores, especially those which are targeted more than once.

Anyone wishing to obtain a simple questionnaire or comment on the proposed priorities can contact Mr Burke on 253 6998 or e-mail him on D.Burke@bury.gov.uk

The seven priorities mapped out are:

Drugs and alcohol: to reduce the level of drug and alcohol-related crime and incidence of disorder.

House burglaries: to reduce domestic burglaries in the hardest-hit areas, and their impact on victims and the community.

Domestic violence:to reduce the incidence and impact of domestic violence and dating abuse.

Racist crime: to tackle fear of racist crime and reduce the number of racist incidents by working together in a co-ordinated way.

Vehicle crime: to reduce the incidence and increase the detection of vehicle crime.

Youth issues: prevention of crime and anti-social behaviour by young people.
