PARTS of Darwen were left without electricity on Wednesday afternoon -- for the second time in two months.

Shops in Bridge Street and Church Bank Street were left without power from about 2.40pm.

A spokeswoman for United Utilities said they did not know what had caused the failure and put it down to a "transient fault". She said an engineer had been called out to an electricity sub-station and power had been restored within an hour.

The same area of the town suffered a similar power failure at the end of last month.

The spokeswoman added she was not aware of any particular problems with the network within the area.
