CONCERNS have been expressed over who should pay for installing CCTV systems in Burnley's taxis .
Coun Carol Stinton said she believed the cost to be £1,000 per vehicle, amounting to hundreds of thousands of pounds.
She believed the cost should be borne by the taxi operators adding: "If I wanted CCTV at my front door I would have to pay for it myself."
Executive member for public protection and community safety, Charles Bullas, told the council meeting there were 32 Hackney carriages and more than 300 private hire vehicles in the borough.
A demonstration of CCTV systems had been well received by the two taxi associations.
The executive would be asked to consider the situation in the New Year after the community safety and environment scrutiny committee had been given an opportunity to consider the matter.
The council had applied to the Government Office North West for funding and were still waiting for a response.
"It will cost cab drivers to hire the equipment," he added.
Coun Peter Doyle commented: "I can see the benefits of such a scheme but I would like confirmation that this council will not be contributing to the funding. Any capital or revenue costs should by provided by the taxi owners or by special government grant."
Coun Steve Wolski said taxi drivers did a vital job especially in the town centre where they have to deal with problems including violence and drunkenness. He added: "If we can apply for the money then it is quite right to do it."
Coun Mozaquir Ali said taxi drivers were the most vulnerable group in Burnley adding: "I would support it financially if we can afford to do it."
